A few nationally renowned companies are based in The Hague like the Nationale Toneel, which performs in the beautiful classical Koninklijke Schouwburg (Royal Theatre). This company presents internationally known pieces by playwrights like Chekhov, Shakespeare and Ibsen. Another important company is Toneelgroep de Appel, with its theatre – a former riding school – in Scheveningen. For some plays, the stage is completely rebuilt to integrate the setting with the play. Theater Zwembad de Regentes is also unique; here, the actors perform their plays in what was once a swimming pool.
